These gusts are affecting the whole southern region and southern parts of the northern region, according to the weather forecasting body.
Officials in New Zealand have announced infrequent high-level wind alerts - the top caution category - in core zones encompassing Canterbury and Wellington.
Locals have been advised to remain inside, stay off roads, and prepare for further electricity and network failures.

Within the capital, a person was fatally injured after being hit by a tree branch at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.
Meanwhile in Wellington, a female was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a street by a powerful blast, in a event that was filmed in a viral dashcam video.
Flights in and out of the urban area have been suspended as a result of the gusts, while some roads and libraries are also closed.
Meanwhile Canterbury officials have declared a crisis declaration, to facilitate recovery activities.
Strike Action Amid Harsh Weather
