This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical body horror, but within Together exists a profound contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that come with most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
